First Day of the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival

After this winter, I think it’s safe to say we’re all ready for some colorful flowers to lift our spirits and ring in spring. Lucky for us, this is the opening weekend of the 33rd Annual Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival! The flowers are coming up strong and beautiful as ever, so festival goers will be treated to a stunning 40 acres of blooming tulips and daffodils in nearly 120 varieties and colors. Each day of the festival, there will be wagon rides, train tours, yummy food, wine tastings and more. $5 per person/$20 per car,

This weekend, Fremont Theater presents a family-friendly show that will have your little music lovers bustin’ a move. Grammy award winner Secret Agent 23 Skidoo is coming to town! Frankenstein’s Comicbook Swap

Boy, Portland is the place to be if you love comics. This Saturday, Frankenstein’s Comicbook Swap returns to the Eagle Lodge for a day full of buying, selling and trading comicbooks. Whether you and your littles are already comicbook lovers, or you’re just interested in exploring a fun, new genre, this event will be a blast. Check out toys, cards, buttons, graphic novels, comics and so much more. Bonus: there will be popcorn! Also, please consider bringing a can of food to donate to the the Oregon Food Bank. $1-5,

Holi Hai

Spring is in the air—and so are dusty plumes of bright colors! It’s time for the magnificent celebration known as Holi, the Hindu festival that celebrates spring, colors and love. Music, dancing and joyfully thrown handfuls of dyed cornstarch, known as gulal, will make this an unforgettable celebration of the season. Arrive wearing all white so you can watch vibrant colors add up one by one! Festival is all ages. $8-20,

About Ruth Plourde

It was the summer of 2015, and Ruth had had it up to here (read: her eyeballs) with east coast livin’, sensing that, for her, Philadelphia might be more lovable from afar. Perhaps she had listened to Tom Waits’ Goin’ Out West two too many times that day, or perhaps dreams of wine country, the Cascades, and temperate rain forests had finally stolen her heart, but once she bought that plane ticket to Portland, OR, there was no going back. Ruth is a barista by day and a poet by night/lunch break. She is currently working on her first poetry collection to be published sometime this year. She couldn’t be happier to be interning for NW Kids Magazine and to be a part of the NW Kids community!
