Activities and Outings

The Short List: Sep 1-4

Labor Day Weekend is upon us! Though many of us have already sent our kids back to school for 2017-18 and some of us are just wrapping up the final school-supply and new-shoes runs, the summer is not quite over yet! Here are a few of the events we’re looking at for the weekend:

All Weekend

The Big Bounce

Head to Hillsboro for the world’s biggest bounce house! There will be multiple themed zones from inflatable forests inhabited by giant inflatable characters (8ft pink gorilla’s anyone?) to super-sized ball pits, slides, obstacles and basketball hoops for you to jump on, slide down and slam-dunk into! When you and your kids need a rest, there are also areas to relax and listen to what the DJ is spinning!  Friday noon-7pm, Sat-Mon 8am-7:30pm. Shute Park, $10-$16.

Oregon State Fair

In case you’ve have missed it so far, The Oregon State Fair will run through Labor Day, so you still have this weekend to make it there! This year’s program will continue to serve up big screams with more than 50 thrilling carnival rides. The annual attractions are also back – street performers, horse competitions, canine agility tests, world reptiles, nightly laser show, and much more. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am-11pm and Monday, 10am-10pm, free.

Sep 2

Early Morning Bird Walk

Get out before the heat of the day and learn about birds at the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge! Walk out on the refuge with an experienced birder and discover the world of birds. Whether you are a first time birder or an expert, this walk is for you! Bring your own binoculars and/or a scope if you have them (extras will be available to borrow)! To participate you must be 8 years of age or older and parents must accompany all children on hikes. The hikes will cover over two miles and take approximately 2 hours. 8am-10am, free (but please pre-register).

Sep 3

Kids’ Korner

Join Creative Roots for some family friendly art fun at the Portland Saturday Market! Sponsored by the Portland Old Town Arts & Cultural Foundation, these activities are free to the public. 2 NW Naito Parkway, PDX. 11:30am-3:30pm, free.

Sep 4

Pointed Man Band

Join the fun at Know Thy Food with the Pointed Man Band, with songs to sing and stories to tell. Explore original tunes, make new friends, learn to beat box and even try to catch some lightning bugs. Not to mention, try to find out the truth behind some invisible pets. An adventure for the whole family. 3434 SE Milwaukie Ave. 10:30-11:15am, $5 per child.
