Getting Duck to the Whitehouse

Little girl mock voting
Little girl mock voting
Currently we are watching politicians duke it out to win our votes, it can be confusing to the most informed, so imagine what our children think.  Instead of trying to dole out the nitty gritty of the blood sport of politics, let the Oregon Children’s Theatre do the work for you with Duck for President, a delightful and informative tale of how our political system works.

As you enter the Newmark Theatre the learning begins, children are encouraged to vote for President, choosing from the Democratic, Green or Republican Party and receiving a sticker proclaiming that children vote too!  They announce the winner at the end of the play, proving that their vote truly does count.

Duck for President opens up on the farm, to the sounds of the live band playing a mix of bluegrass and country. We meet our cast of characters; Farmer Brown, Cow, Hen, Pig and of course Duck.  Farmer Brown, played by Joshua Stenseth, sings his tale of woes as a hard working farmer with chores that need to be done from sun up to sun down.  He is dedicated to his farm, but the animals just want to play; well he puts his foot down and puts the animals to work.  This begins our premise for Duck for President.

The animals are truly unhappy that they must chip in around the farm and wonder who exactly put Farmer Brown in charge.  They then encourage Duck, played by Hogan Frtiz, to run for farmer.  This introduces us to the wonderful and exciting way that our Democracy works.  The election process is presented in a fun way, interwoven with song and fact, from the way we register to vote, to casting a ballot, and even what happens in the case of a recount.

Each one of the animals plays its own part in getting Duck to the White House, making this a very unique, entertaining and enlightening tale for parents and kids alike.  Duck for President is running now until November 4th at the Newmark Theatre.  To find out more information, please visit www.duckforpresident.org.
