Tye and Joan Steinbach have owned Thinker Toys since November 1994. In the past two decades, the former science teachers have raised two kids and created a destination toy store beloved beyond the SW Portland location. The mom-and-pop shop owners bring a personalized, local touch to their business, and customers have taken note with increased sales, year after year.

The 20th anniversary weekend celebrations begin on Friday, November 7th. Thinker Toys joins the First Friday fun in the Village with a happy hour for grownups.  Customers may munch on tasty and healthy appetizers while enjoying beer tastings courtesy of Sasquatch Brew Pub.

Saturday November 8th is a big day of fun for all ages, with an 11 am sing-along concert featuring Red Yarn, and a photo opp with the Snow Queen (courtesy of Portland’s own Dragon Puppet Theater. The Snow Queen will also do face painting during 11 am to 1 pm. Other activities will be announced soon. On Sunday November 9th, early holiday shoppers will enjoy coffee and snacks, and more face painting.

Thinker Toys is one of the most beloved, and certainly one of the most long-standing, toy retailers in Portland. Their Multnomah Village location has become a community nexus and destination, with weekly activities as well as a huge range of gender neutral playthings. They live the “shop local” dream, supporting and donating to 100 organizations each year. The Steinbachs are active members of the local business association, Neighborhood House, and the Hillsdale Farmer’s Market.   Neighborhood House executive director Rick Nitti says, “Joan and Tye are amazing community leaders. Not only have they helped make Multnomah Village a thriving business community, but through their volunteer efforts they have also made SW Portland a better place for all its residents.”Thinker Toys is located at 7784 SW Capitol Highway in Portland; telephone (503) 245-3936.
